Understanding a Central Government payslip

A typical payslip has three parts. Earnings: basic pay from your pay matrix cell, DA at the notified rate (60% from January 2026), HRA by city class, Transport Allowance with DA on it, and any department-specific allowances. Deductions: NPS at 10% of Basic + DA (the government's 14% goes straight to your PRAN and never appears as a deduction), CGHS by pay level, CGEGIS, and income-tax TDS. Net pay is what reaches your bank on the last working day of the month.

Frequently asked questions

What deductions apply to a Central Government salary?

Typical deductions: NPS employee contribution (10% of Basic + DA), CGHS subscription (₹250–₹1,000 per month by pay level), CGEGIS insurance (₹30–₹120), income tax TDS, and optional recoveries such as licence fee for government quarters.

What is Transport Allowance (TPTA)?

A fixed monthly allowance: ₹3,600 + DA for Levels 3–8 (₹7,200 + DA for Level 9 and above) in higher-TPTA cities, and half those base amounts elsewhere. Levels 1–2 receive ₹1,350/₹900 + DA.

Does DA apply to allowances?

DA itself is a percentage of basic pay. Transport Allowance additionally earns DA on itself. HRA does not earn DA.

Why is my actual take-home slightly different?

Departments differ on CGHS slab, professional recoveries, quarters licence fees and TDS spread. This calculator gives a close estimate, not your exact payslip.
